This program is especially geared to provide both traditional and non-traditional students with educational advantages for career placement and achievement at the local and state level in government employment. It also has a proven history of placing MA graduates in local and national doctoral programs for the completion of terminal degrees.   

Key strengths of this program are: faculty expertise and mentorship, research and publishing opportunities, small class sizes and concentrated professional development through presentation of research at local and national conferences.

Graduates of this program will be able to:

• Successfully demonstrate history content, consisting of both a historiographical nature and contextual information.
• Successfully demonstrate the ability to analyze and synthesize historical sources, perspectives, and claims regarding History content
• Demonstrate success in a post-graduate education and employment

Core Courses

• HIS 585 Historical Methods (3)
• Elective Seminar Courses (6 total hrs. required)
• Elective Graduate History Courses (15 total hrs. required)
• Additional Graduate History Courses or (approved) Cognates (9 total hrs. required)

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
• GRE is requested but not required.
• Letters of recommendation - 2 required
• Statement of purpose
• Resume/CV

• Courses are predominantly offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters in the evening hours
• Typical course load per semester: 9 hours
• Online learning platform: Canvas
• On-campus requirements: Some courses can be offered online, but the degree does require in-person presence.

2. Submit all required documents (transcripts, letters of recommendation, goal statement, resume)
3. Pay a $30 application fee
4. Application review by Graduate Studies and program faculty 
   • Once all documents are submitted, we request 10 business days for departments to review the application packet and respond.
5. Admission decision notification
   • Applicants will receive a notification letter with information regarding their admission status via their personal email. If admitted, this letter will include information regarding their student ID and University e-mail.
6. Schedule a meeting with a School of Education advisor
